NAS failures we handle

A NAS hides its RAID behind a friendly interface, which is why the first sign of trouble is usually a volume that has already crashed.

Volume degraded or crashed

The web interface reports a crashed volume and the shares disappear. The underlying array is intact more often than not.

Failed volume expansion

An expansion interrupted by a power cut or a bad disk leaves the volume half migrated, with old and new layouts on the same set of disks.

Filesystem will not mount

EXT4, Btrfs and ZFS volumes with damaged superblocks, corrupt metadata or a broken pool that the NAS can no longer assemble.

Two or more disks dropped

One dropped disk is survivable. Two takes the volume offline — and the second is often a disk that was quietly failing for months.

NAS will not boot

A dead unit, a firmware fault or a failed system partition. The data lives on the disks, not the box, so a dead NAS is not a dead volume.

Deletion or factory reset

Shares deleted, a reset run by mistake, or snapshots removed. Recoverable while the blocks have not been reused.

A NAS will often try to repair itself the moment you power it back on. That is exactly what you want to avoid.
