How it works

Select. Spin Down. Confirmed.

No drivers, no accounts and no setup. Open the app, pick the hard disk and press one button.

Select the drive

Every physical drive is listed with its model, serial number, capacity, interface, type and drive letters, so you can be sure you have the right disk.

Press Spin Down

HDD Switch asks you to confirm, flushes the drive’s own cache, then tells the drive to stop its platters. Spin Up starts them again.

See the real state

The app asks the drive for its power state without waking it and shows Standby or Spinning as verified, or Unknown when the connection cannot tell.

HDD Switch was made in a data recovery lab, where the wrong disk is never an option. Before anything is sent, you see the drive’s model, PhysicalDrive number and serial number, and you are warned if the drive is in use.

A small, focused tool: see your drives, choose one, spin it down or up, and know that it worked.

Real spindle control

Sends genuine ATA STANDBY IMMEDIATE / IDLE IMMEDIATE or SCSI START STOP UNIT commands to the selected disk.

State verified by the drive

Honest results

It Never Pretends a Disk Has Stopped

Some USB adapters accept a command but cannot report what the drive did. HDD Switch then says State Unknown instead of showing a reassuring label it cannot prove.

Safe around customer drives

Power Commands Only. Nothing Else.

HDD Switch can only send a fixed set of power and read-only identification commands. There is no way to type in other commands, and it never writes to a drive.

  • No writing, formatting, partitioning or firmware commands
  • SSD, NVMe and flash drives get no spin command at all
  • Spin Down is blocked on the Windows system disk
  • The drive’s cache is flushed before it stops

Yes. It is free to download and use, for personal or business purposes, with no time limit, no account and no ads. Donations to our village education initiative are welcome but never required.
HDD Switch asks you to confirm, flushes the drive’s own write cache and then sends the standard power command that tells the drive to stop its platters: ATA STANDBY IMMEDIATE, or SCSI START STOP UNIT for SAS drives. It then asks the drive for its power state.
HDD Switch reads the power state back from the drive with CHECK POWER MODE, a command that does not wake a sleeping disk, and shows Standby as verified. If a USB adapter or controller cannot report the state, the app shows Unknown rather than guessing.
Hard disks on a SATA port of the motherboard work directly. Drives behind SAS HBAs and USB docks or enclosures work when the controller or adapter passes power commands through, which most do. If a connection cannot, HDD Switch says Not Supported by Controller / Bridge instead of failing silently.
No, and it does not try. SSDs and NVMe drives have no spinning platters, so HDD Switch marks them Not Applicable and never sends them a spin command.
Windows only lets administrators send commands directly to a drive. HDD Switch asks for permission each time it starts, so Spin Down, Spin Up and Check State always work.
Windows starts a hard disk again whenever something reads it, such as File Explorer, antivirus or search indexing. Drives with a drive letter are woken most often. For bench work, keep the drive without a drive letter or offline in Disk Management.
It cannot write data, format, partition, change drive settings or send firmware commands. It only sends power commands and read-only identification commands. As with any power change, do not spin down a disk that is being used; the app warns you when it is.
No. Drive models, serial numbers and logs stay on your PC. The only connection the app makes is a check for updates on datacarelabs.com when it starts, which sends nothing about your drives.
The app tells you when a new version is available and installs it with one click. Updates are digitally signed by DataCare Labs and checked before they are installed.
