External drive failures we handle

A portable drive is a bare hard disk or SSD behind a USB bridge. Knowing which of the two has failed is most of the diagnosis, and it is what the free analysis establishes.

Not detected on any port

The drive draws power but no computer will mount it. Often a bridge-board or connector fault rather than the disk itself — the cheapest kind of failure to find out about.

Clicking or beeping

A head or motor fault. The platters are usually intact, but every extra power-on risks scoring them. This one has to be opened in the clean room.

Dropped while running

A fall with the heads loaded is the worst case for a portable drive. Stop using it — spinning a dropped drive is what turns a recoverable fault into permanent damage.

Bridge board or connector failure

Snapped micro-USB ports, failed SATA-to-USB bridges and dead power circuitry. The disk inside is often perfectly healthy.

Unsafe eject or corrupted filesystem

Pulled out mid-write, or a partition table that no longer resolves. The drive mounts as RAW, asks to be formatted, or shows an empty volume.

Hardware-encrypted drives

Many portable drives encrypt on the bridge board, so the disk cannot simply be read in another enclosure. These need the original controller handled correctly.

External drives are the media people most often try to fix themselves, and the attempts are what usually cause the permanent damage.
