Case Overview : MacBook Data Recovery for a Pune Architect

This Mac data recovery in Pune began when an architect’s MacBook Pro SSD developed bad sectors and its controller started to overheat. The Mac froze, then stopped starting at all. Years of drawings, 3D models and client projects were on that one SSD. Even so, our engineers recovered 100% of the data within 2 days, and the architect was very happy to see every project back.

We offer Mac and MacBook data recovery to architects, designers and businesses in Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad and the rest of India, with free pickup from your office.

  • Device : Apple MacBook Pro
  • SSD : 256GB Apple PCIe SSD (MZ-JPV2560)
  • Data : Drawings, 3D models, projects
  • Problem : Bad sectors + overheating controller
  • Turnaround : 2 days
  • Success Rate : 100%

Problem Description: A MacBook Pro That Ran Hot, Then Would Not Start

The architect used the MacBook Pro for everything: drawings, 3D models, renders, site photos and client presentations. The last Time Machine backup was several months old, so most current projects existed only on the internal SSD.

First, the MacBook started running hot, even with only a few apps open. Then it slowed down, and the spinning beach ball appeared every time a project folder opened. Soon after, Finder froze in the middle of copying files. Finally, the Mac restarted and showed a flashing folder with a question mark, which means it could not find its startup disk.

The symptoms included:

  • A hot MacBook and loud fans during light work
  • The spinning beach ball whenever project folders opened
  • File copies freezing halfway
  • A flashing folder with a question mark at startup

Understanding the Challenge: SSD Bad Sectors and a Hot Controller

This MacBook Pro uses an Apple PCIe SSD on a slim blade with Apple’s own connector, so it does not fit a normal SSD slot or USB case. On it, a controller chip manages every read and write, while the NAND chips hold the data.

When NAND cells weaken, SSD bad sectors appear: areas that fail to read on the first try. The controller then retries each weak area again and again, and that extra work makes it hot. Once it overheats, it slows down and drops the connection, so the Mac freezes or cannot find its startup disk.

Because of that, every restart and every recovery app made things worse. Each attempt kept the hot controller busy on the same SSD bad sectors. That is why MacBook data recovery from a failing SSD needs a lab, not software.

Newer Macs are different, because their SSD is soldered to the logic board. Read about T2 and Apple silicon Mac recovery and our complete Mac recovery guide.

MacBook Pro SSD Data Recovery in Our Pune Lab

Our engineers followed our step-by-step process:

  • Removed the SSD blade from the MacBook Pro and connected it to our lab system through an Apple SSD adapter, in read-only mode
  • Fitted a heatsink and steady airflow, so the controller stayed cool
  • Read the healthy areas first, in short sessions with cooling pauses in between
  • Went back to the SSD bad sectors with slow, repeated reads until each one gave up its data
  • Built a complete image of the 256GB SSD and worked only on that copy
  • Rebuilt the Mac file system and opened sample drawings, models and renders from every project

The photo above shows the chip side of the blade: the Samsung controller next to the connector, and the four NAND chips that hold the data. Keeping that controller cool is what made a full read possible.

This MacBook Pro SSD data recovery took 2 days from quote approval. Most SSD recovery cases finish within 24 to 48 hours, and our SSD recovery charges page explains how pricing works.

Outcome of the MacBook Data Recovery

We recovered 100% of the data: every drawing, 3D model, render and client folder, with the original folder structure and file names. The architect was very happy to see all the projects again.

We copied everything to a new external drive formatted for Mac, so the files opened straight away on the replacement MacBook. Our security measures kept the client designs confidential, and we erased our copy 7 days after delivery.

Lessons for Architects and Designers: Protect Your Projects

A design studio’s work often lives on one laptop. Still, a few habits keep a failing SSD from becoming a lost project:

  • Keep Time Machine running to an external drive, and check that it actually finishes
  • Also keep a second copy of active projects in the cloud or on the office server
  • Treat a hot MacBook, loud fans and the spinning beach ball as warning signs, not just slowness
  • If you see a flashing folder with a question mark, power off and do not keep restarting
  • Do not run disk repair or recovery apps on a failing SSD, because each run stresses the controller further

MacBook Data Recovery: Frequently Asked Questions

Answers for architects, designers and businesses in Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad or anywhere in India whose MacBook will not start or keeps freezing.

Often, yes. When the MacBook will not start, the data is usually still on the SSD. On older MacBook Pros, a lab removes the SSD blade and reads it directly, as we did here. Newer Macs with soldered SSDs need a different method.
It means the Mac cannot find its startup disk. Sometimes the cause is a software problem, but a failing SSD is common too. If the Mac was also hot, slow or freezing, power it off and get the SSD checked before you try anything else.
Usually the SSD has bad sectors, so its controller keeps retrying reads and works much harder than normal. That extra work makes it hot. Once it overheats, it slows down or drops the connection, and the Mac freezes.
Not really, because SSD bad sectors come from worn memory cells. However, the data in them can often still be read with slow, careful lab methods. So copy your data first, and then replace the SSD.
Sometimes. On T2 and Apple silicon Macs, the data is encrypted and tied to the logic board, so the board must work. Labs repair the board first. Read our guide to T2 and M-series recovery.
No. An Apple service centre replaces the faulty part, and a new SSD or logic board arrives empty. So recover the data first, and then send the MacBook for repair.
Most cases take 24 to 48 hours after you approve the quote. This MacBook Pro SSD data recovery took 2 days, because the hot controller needed cooling pauses. See our SSD data recovery cost page too.
