Case Overview : Dead SSD Data Recovery for a Mumbai Business Owner

This dead SSD data recovery in Mumbai started when the WD Blue SA510 in a business owner’s laptop shorted and burnt parts of its board, so we used SSD chip-off recovery and read every NAND chip. In fact, the 1TB SSD held critical data for his mechanical engineering company, and it showed no sign of life. Even so, our engineers recovered 100% of the data.

We offer SSD data recovery to businesses in Mumbai, Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad and the rest of India, with free pickup from your office or factory.

  • Brand : WD Blue SA510 (Western Digital)
  • Capacity : 1TB 2.5-inch SATA SSD
  • Data : Drawings, designs, quotations
  • Problem : Shorted board + burnt components
  • Method : Chip-off: every NAND chip read
  • Success Rate : 100%

Problem Description: A Short Circuit Killed the Laptop SSD

The owner of a mechanical engineering company in Mumbai ran much of his business from one laptop. Its WD Blue SA510 SSD held machine drawings, 3D designs, customer quotations, costing sheets and purchase orders. When he spoke to us, he explained how critical that data was: some of it existed nowhere else.

One morning, after a power fluctuation at the factory, the laptop would not start. At the same time, there was a faint burning smell near the SSD bay. Later, a local repair shop removed the SSD, found burnt parts on its board and said it was dead. Instead of giving up, the owner called us, and we arranged a courier pickup from Mumbai.

The symptoms included:

  • A laptop that would not start after a power fluctuation
  • A faint burning smell near the SSD
  • The SSD not detected on any computer
  • Visible burn marks on the SSD board

Understanding the Challenge: Why a Dead SSD Needs Chip-Off Recovery

Inside a SATA SSD, a controller chip manages every read and write, while NAND flash chips hold the data. In addition, a small power section feeds both of them. When a surge hits that power section, parts can short and burn, and sometimes the damage reaches the controller too.

In this case, the short had burnt several parts in the power section, and the controller was not safe to power up. A board repair could have shorted it again and put the data at risk. However, the NAND chips themselves looked healthy. So the safest path was SSD chip-off recovery: read the NAND chips directly and leave the damaged board behind.

Still, that is harder than it sounds. After all, the controller spreads data across all the chips, mixes it with a pattern, adds error correction and keeps its own map of where everything sits. So a lab must undo all of that to rebuild the files. That is why dead SSD data recovery needs a lab, not software.

WD Blue SA510 Recovery: Reading Every NAND Chip in Our Lab

Our engineers followed our step-by-step process for this WD Blue SA510 recovery:

  • Checked the board under a microscope and confirmed the short and the burnt parts
  • Removed every NAND chip from the damaged board with controlled heat
  • Read each chip on our NAND reader, page by page, several times
  • Corrected bit errors and removed the controller’s data pattern
  • Put the pages back in the right order and rebuilt the controller’s map
  • Built a complete 1TB image, rebuilt the file system and opened sample files from every folder

This SSD chip-off recovery took 5 days from quote approval, because every chip had to be read and the data rebuilt. Most SSD recovery cases finish within 24 to 48 hours, and our SSD recovery charges page explains how pricing works.

Outcome of the Dead SSD Data Recovery

This dead SSD data recovery ended with 100% of the data back: every drawing, 3D design, quotation, costing sheet and purchase order, with the original folder structure and file names.

First, we shared the most urgent folders through our secure OTP cloud link. Then we sent the full data to Mumbai on a new drive by courier. Our security measures kept the company’s designs confidential, and we erased our copy 7 days after delivery.

Lessons for Factory and Business Owners: Protect Critical Data

Many business owners keep their most important files on one laptop. Still, a few habits keep a dead SSD from stopping the business:

  • Back up drawings, designs and quotations every day, and check that the backup finished
  • Keep a second copy away from the factory, for example in the cloud
  • Use a good surge protector or UPS, especially where the power fluctuates
  • If you smell burning, unplug the laptop at once and do not power it on again
  • Do not let anyone power up a burnt SSD to test it, because a second short can damage the NAND chips

Dead SSD Data Recovery: Frequently Asked Questions

Answers for business owners and home users in Mumbai, Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad or anywhere in India whose SSD is dead, burnt or not detected.

Often, yes. When an SSD dies, the data is usually still in its NAND chips. A lab either repairs the board or reads the chips directly, then rebuilds the files. Here, we read every NAND chip and got 100% back.
Yes. A power surge, a faulty charger or adapter, or liquid can short parts on the SSD board. As a result, you may notice a burning smell or burn marks. After that, the SSD is not detected, but the NAND chips are often still fine.
In SSD chip-off recovery, a lab removes the NAND chips from a damaged board and reads them directly. Then it undoes the controller’s work: error correction, data patterns, page order and the map of where data sits.
No. Some SSDs encrypt data with a key held in the controller, so the chips alone are not enough, and the board must be repaired first. That is why a lab checks the SSD model and the damage before choosing a method.
If only the laptop is dead, remove the SSD and connect it to another computer. If the SSD is not detected there either, stop and send it to a lab. Read what to do when an SSD dies.
No. Recovery software needs a working SSD that the computer can detect. In contrast, a dead or burnt SSD needs lab work on the board or the NAND chips. Powering it again can even cause a second short.
Most SSD cases take 24 to 48 hours after you approve the quote. This WD Blue SA510 recovery took 5 days, because every NAND chip had to be read. See our SSD data recovery cost page too.
