Dropped hard drive data recovery: both sides of the WD 8TB hard drive from Gujarat, 100% of 6.4TB recovered

Case Overview : Dropped Hard Drive Data Recovery for a Gujarat Photographer

This dropped hard drive data recovery in Gujarat began when a wedding photographer’s WD 8TB hard drive slipped and fell to the floor. After that, it clicked, and no computer could detect it. The drive held 16 weddings and events: RAW photos, video footage and edited albums. In our lab, the cause turned out to be hard drive head failure, with a lot of bad sectors and degraded platters. Even so, our engineers recovered 100% of the data, about 6.4TB, within 5 days.

We offer data recovery to photographers and studios across Gujarat, including Surat, Rajkot, Ahmedabad and Vadodara. Our lab is in Pune, close to Pimpri-Chinchwad, and free pickup covers all of India.

  • Brand : Western Digital
  • Model : WD80EDAZ, 8TB
  • Data : 16 weddings & events (about 6.4TB)
  • Problem : Dropped: head failure, bad sectors, platter damage
  • Turnaround : 5 days
  • Success Rate : 100%

Problem Description: A Dropped Hard Drive Full of Wedding Shoots

The photographer used the WD 8TB drive as the main archive for every shoot. After each wedding or event, the RAW photos and video footage went straight onto it, and the editing work started from there.

One day, the drive slipped by mistake and fell onto the floor. When it was connected again, it made a repeated clicking sound and then went quiet. Windows did not detect it, and a second computer could not see it either. Sixteen weddings and events were on it, and there was no complete second copy.

So the photographer handed the drive to a local computer dealer, one of our dealer partners in Gujarat, who sent it on to our lab.

The symptoms included:

  • A repeated clicking sound right after power-on
  • Not detected in Windows or in Disk Management
  • No folders or files visible on any computer

Understanding the Challenge: Why a Dropped Hard Drive Stops Working

Inside a hard drive, tiny read/write heads float a few nanometres above the spinning platters. A drop can push the heads into the platters, bend them or tear them off their arms. This kind of head crash is the most common cause of hard drive head failure.

Once the heads are damaged, the drive cannot read its own firmware or your files. As a result, it clicks while it keeps searching for the data. Worse, a damaged head can scrape the platter surface every time the drive spins up. That is how a small fault turns into platter degradation and thousands of bad sectors.

In this case, the heads had failed, and some areas of the platters were already degraded. Therefore, every extra power-on or software scan would have destroyed more of the wedding photos. That is why dropped hard drive data recovery needs a clean room, not software.

For the warning signs, read our guides on what to do when a hard drive clicks and a hard disk that is not detected.

Dropped Hard Drive Data Recovery in Our Lab: 5 Days of Careful Work

Our engineers followed our step-by-step process:

  • Checked the circuit board and the motor first, to confirm the fault before opening the drive
  • Opened the drive in our clean-room workstation and inspected the heads and platters
  • Replaced the failed read/write heads with a matched donor head assembly from a compatible WD drive
  • Mapped the platter surfaces and read the healthy areas first, so most of the data was safe early
  • Went back to the degraded zones with slow, gentle passes, and read each bad sector several times
  • Rebuilt the file system from the clone and copied out every folder, with names and dates intact

Hard drive head failure on its own is routine work for us. However, the platter degradation is why this WD 8TB data recovery took 5 days. Most hard disk data recovery cases finish within 24 to 48 hours of quote approval, but damaged platters need slow, patient reading. Rushing them can ruin the surface for good. Our hard disk recovery charges page explains how pricing works.

Finally, we checked the result. We opened sample RAW photos and played video clips from each of the 16 event folders, and every one of them opened normally.

Outcome: 100% of the Wedding Data Recovered

This WD 8TB data recovery returned 100% of the photographer’s data, about 6.4TB. All 16 weddings and events came back, with every RAW photo, video clip and edited album in its original folder. So the photographer could deliver the pending albums and films.

We copied everything to a new drive, which went back to Gujarat through the dealer. Our security measures kept the couples’ private photos confidential throughout, and we erased our copy 7 days after delivery. For photographers, our photo recovery and video recovery services also repair damaged RAW files and clips.

Lessons for Photographers: How to Protect Your Shoots

Every photographer has one drive that holds everything. Still, a single drop should never be able to wipe out years of work:

  • Keep at least two copies of every shoot on separate drives, plus one copy in the cloud or off-site
  • Carry drives in a padded case, and never move a drive while it is running
  • If a drive falls, do not power it on again to test it, because each spin can scratch the platters
  • If it clicks or beeps, unplug it at once and do not run recovery software
  • Learn the signs of a failing hard drive, so you can copy your data in time
  • Recover first, then claim the warranty: read about WD warranty and your data

In short, a padded case and a second copy cost far less than hard drive head failure on your only archive.

Dropped Hard Drive Data Recovery: Frequently Asked Questions

Answers for photographers and businesses in Gujarat, Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad or anywhere in India whose hard drive was dropped and stopped working.

Yes, in most cases. A drop usually damages the read/write heads, while the data stays on the platters. So dropped hard drive data recovery means replacing the heads in a clean room and then reading the data. The sooner you stop using the drive, the better the chances.
The heads can hit the platters, bend or break, and sometimes the motor jams too. As a result, the drive may click, beep, stay silent or not be detected. If it keeps running with damaged heads, it can scratch the platters and destroy data.
Clicking usually means hard drive head failure: the heads cannot read the data, so the arm keeps moving back and forth. Unplug it at once. Running it longer, or trying recovery software, can turn a head problem into platter damage.
Do not power it on again, and do not open it. Instead, pack it in a padded box and send it to a data recovery lab. A drive that stops being detected after a fall almost always has a physical fault, so software cannot help.
The data can be recovered, but you should not trust the drive itself again. We fit donor heads only to read the data out once. After that, copy everything to a new drive and retire the old one.
Usually not, because warranties exclude physical damage such as drops. Also, no warranty covers your data, since a replacement drive arrives empty. So recover the data first. Read our WD warranty guide for details.
Most cases take 24 to 48 hours after you approve the quote. Drives with platter damage take longer, because the damaged areas need slow reading; this WD 8TB data recovery took 5 days. See our hard disk data recovery cost page too.
