If a WD hard disk — a My Passport, Elements, My Book, or an internal Blue, Black, Red or Purple — has stopped working, the two things people search for are the Western Digital customer care number and the nearest WD service centre. Both are below, taken from WD’s own India support pages. The third thing, which those pages say only in the small print, matters more if the drive has files on it: WD replaces drives; it does not repair them, does not return them, and does not recover data. Read the number, then read that section before you hand the drive over.

Western Digital customer care number (India)

  • Toll-free technical support: 1800-569-3982 — Monday to Saturday, 9:00 to 18:00 IST, English. Published on WD’s India contact page.
  • Chat and email — from the same page, through a WD support account. A support account is also what you need to file a replacement request.
  • SanDisk products are a different company since 2025 — SanDisk flash drives, memory cards and SanDisk-branded SSDs have their own line and portal. The WD number will redirect you; save the call and use SanDisk’s (covered in our SanDisk warranty and customer care guide).

Before you call, have the serial number from the drive’s label (on the enclosure for a Passport, Elements or My Book — do not open it to read the bare drive’s label) and the purchase invoice. WD’s India warranty runs from the invoice date at an authorised distributor, and the agent will ask for both.

WD service centres in India — what they actually are

Western Digital does not run repair centres. What it lists for India, on its RMA addresses page, are 18 “WD Drop Points” — partner shops where you can hand in a drive that already has a warranty replacement number, instead of couriering it. All 18 keep the same hours: Monday to Saturday, 10 AM to 6 PM.

Cities with a drop point (September 2026): Agra, Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Cochin, Delhi (Nehru Place), Gurgaon, Hyderabad, Indore, Jaipur, Kolkata, Mumbai (Ghatkopar and Vashi), Patna, Pune, Rajkot, Saharanpur and Surat. The Pune drop point is on Pune–Solapur Road, Hadapsar; the Delhi one is in Nehru Place. Partner names and addresses change — check the official page before travelling, and carry the RMA number, because a drop point will not accept a drive without one.

Two things a drop point cannot do: diagnose the drive (it is a hand-over counter, not a workshop) and give you the data (see below). The many “WD service centre” listings on directory sites are computer shops and recovery firms using the brand name; none of them is WD.

How a WD warranty replacement works in India

  1. Check the warranty at WD Support → Check Warranty Coverage Status with the serial number. It shows in warranty with an end date, out of warranty, or not found (a typo, or a drive that came inside a laptop or NAS, whose warranty belongs to that maker).
  2. Request a warranty replacement from a WD support account — WD’s India page says a return must be created there. You get a Warranty Replacement (RMA) number.
  3. Send or drop the drive — courier with a traceable carrier, RMA number marked on the outside of the box, or hand it in at a drop point. WD’s instructions: no packages without a valid RMA number.
  4. Receive a replacement, which WD’s policy says may be a previously used, repaired and tested drive. Track it at Check Warranty Replacement Status.

What voids it: opening or removing the external enclosure, and removing or damaging the label — both listed in WD’s India policy. Full detail, including the My Passport enclosure trap, is in our WD warranty check guide.

What WD customer care cannot do: give your data back

This is the part the toll-free line will confirm but not volunteer. WD’s warranty policy and its warranty replacement and data recovery article say, in order:

  • “Data Recovery is not covered under this warranty and is not part of the warranty returns process.”
  • “Western Digital does not provide data recovery services.”
  • Defective drives are not returned. The drive you send in is gone; a different drive comes back.
  • For anyone who needs the files, WD points to its list of data recovery partners and adds that any agreement is between you and that provider.

So the order matters. Once the drive is in a courier bag with an RMA number on it, the data on it is finished. If the files are worth more than a recertified drive, recovery comes first, the claim second.

The right order when the drive has data on it

  1. Call 1800-569-3982, confirm the warranty and note the end date — but do not create the RMA yet. Most WD warranties are 2, 3 or 5 years; a few weeks for recovery rarely costs you the claim.
  2. Stop powering the drive. A clicking Passport loses platter surface each spin-up; a drive with bad sectors gets worse with every scan. Do not run CHKDSK or WD Dashboard’s “repair” options on a drive whose data you want.
  3. Get the drive analysed. The free analysis at the lab says whether recovery needs the enclosure or the drive opened. Detected-but-failing drives, formatted drives and board or firmware faults are imaged with the enclosure intact; clicking, beeping or non-spinning drives need a head or motor swap in the clean room, which breaks the seal.
  4. If it must be opened, ask WD support in writing first whether the claim survives, and keep the case number. WD’s policy is silent on third-party recovery beyond the enclosure and label rules — a written answer is what protects you.
  5. Then file the RMA and send or drop the drive.

WD drive recovery at DataCare Labs, Pune

We recover every Western Digital line — My Passport, Elements, My Book, My Cloud, and the Blue, Black, Red, Purple and Gold internals — as hard disk data recovery, external hard drive recovery or NAS recovery for My Cloud units. Analysis is free and takes 25–30 minutes once the drive reaches the lab in Baner, Pune; drives come to us by courier from every city on WD’s drop-point list. Single-drive charges start at ₹3,000 for logical faults, ₹6,000 for firmware and board work and ₹10,500 where the clean room is needed — quoted after the analysis, charged only if the data comes back. Contact us or call +91 9859 070809. We are not Western Digital; for the warranty itself, the number at the top of this page is the one to use.

WD customer care and service — frequently asked questions

The India number, drop points, what WD replaces, and why the data has to come first.

1800-569-3982, toll-free, Monday to Saturday 9:00–18:00 IST, English — as published on WD’s India contact page. Chat and email support run through a WD support account from the same page.
WD lists 18 drop points in India (Agra, Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Cochin, Delhi, Gurgaon, Hyderabad, Indore, Jaipur, Kolkata, Mumbai, Patna, Pune, Rajkot, Saharanpur, Surat), open Monday to Saturday 10 AM–6 PM. They accept drives that already have a warranty replacement number; they do not diagnose or repair.
No. WD replaces a defective in-warranty drive with another drive, which its policy says may be previously used, repaired and tested. The drive you send in is not returned.
No. WD’s policy states that data recovery is not covered and not part of the returns process, and that Western Digital does not provide data recovery services. It refers customers to a list of data recovery partners; any agreement is between you and the provider.
Usually. Faults that do not need the enclosure or drive opened — bad sectors, formatting, board and firmware failures — are recovered with the seal intact, and the claim is unaffected. If the drive must be opened, ask WD support in writing first whether the claim will be honoured.
Not since 2025. SanDisk is a separate company with its own India toll-free line (1800-569-3411) and its own support portal. WD’s number and warranty tool will not handle a SanDisk product.
